Community Group

Councilors News

1.       Meeting August 8th at Newmarket Theatre – Glenway Community Group has been granted time in the theatre
            a.
We have been granted the Newmarket Theatre after Councilor Chris
Emanuel’s  slide presentation and question and answer period on August 8th.              b.
This  will be a good opportunity for the community to further organize and to
discuss strategies to proceed. It would be helpful if we can find ways to ensure
we have some time at the end for candid community dialogue. Please do not
run the early session too late.
             c.
I would like to provide a brief overview on what the Glenway Community Group
                 is and the approach to-date.
             d.
As in any community there are many opinions, disagreements, emotions,
distrust, egos, special interest and much more we have to deal with. It is a
challenge. We have to start somewhere as a larger group if we want to have any
impact on the future of our community.
             e.
We should have the common goal of coming together as a large group but
respect the possibility of smaller groups if the right people and circumstance
come forward. A good example of this is a specific street group to focus on
                 getting a street involved.
             f.
As you can appreciate this meeting is called at a time many people are on
holidays. It has also been difficult for GCG to call meetings and organize people
                 on summer holidays.
             g.
We should make the most of the meeting on August 8th and therefore I
encourage people to attend, ask neighbors to attend and help create ways to
                 get people involved.
             h.
I welcome agenda ideas and volunteers.
             i.
We will also announce the next large group meeting.

2.       Issues with the new developer’s vision for Glenway

a.       Please help to continue to develop the issues page on our website. It has grown in recent days.
b.
Bring a copy to the August 8th meeting to ask questions.

3.       FUNDRAISING
              a.
We all know the importance of money in society. The ones that have it
seem to get things done their way.
              b.
We need money to ensure our issues as a result of any development are
                    identified, understood and acted on.
              c.
Discussions with other development cases likes ours in other cities has helped
us understand what we are facing and why we need to take action with and in
addition to the Town of Newmarket.
              d.
We will sell lawn signs and T-shirts at the meeting as a test of community
interest and support. If people will not support us with $20.00 at this stage
then we are in trouble. We will take donations of any size for a sign, shirt or
with no acknowledgement – Cheques payable to “Glenway Community Group”.
The order forms can be printed from our website and brought to the meeting.
See the ‘Keep Glenway Green” page on www.glenwaycommunitygroup.com .
              e.
Please play a role in making our initial fundraising successful. Help us reach
the goal of 1,000 signs through our neighborhood. This will give us a great
                  start.
              f.
Signs and T-Shirts are available on the “Keep Glenway Green” page of
www.glenwaycommunitygroup.com . We are running out of inventory with signs
but based on sales we can place a large order and fulfill within a week. Shirts
are not in inventory and take longer to coordinate the printing – can take
                   several weeks.

4.       AWARENESS

a.       We have over 230 on our e-mail distribution lists which is a good accomplishment with most of the growth in the past month, since the developers’ meeting in June.

b.      There is need for more growth in numbers and we need to reach beyond the immediate golf course area. We will hand out contact information at the August 8th meeting for the many who may not know we exist. Please take the opportunity to help promote our existence (when asking a question about issues – fell free to identify the issues which are being developed on www.glenwaycommunitygroup.com )

News Bulletin re:  Smoke Detectors

As of March 1, 2006, every home in Ontario is required to have working smoke alarms on every storey or level, including basements. Does your home have Aluminum Wiring
Acquiring insurance on homes with aluminium  wiring may require a specific certificate stating that the Aluminium wiring has been inspected by a qualified
electrical inspector. This certificate may have to be ordered and paid for by the owner (seller) of the home. This eventually  may be a requirement on renewal of home owner’s policies as well.
